Philadelphia Phillies 2020 MLB Draft tracker: Full list of picks, including Mick Abel in the first round
The Phillies went with a prep arm with the 15th overall pick of the draft
Major League Baseball wrapped up its 2020 amateur draft on Thursday night. The spread of the novel coronavirus required the draft to be held virtually instead of in Omaha, Nebraska alongside the College World Series. The owners' desire to slash costs, meanwhile, led to the draft being shortened from 40 rounds to five.
With the 15th overall pick, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Mick Abel, a right-hander out of Jesuit High School in Oregon. Abel and the rest of the Phillies' haul earned them a B grade from our experts.
The Phillies hit a home run by landing prep right-hander Mick Abel in the middle of the first round. He has all the makings of at least a mid-rotation starter, albeit one who will require developmental time. Their other notable pick was third-round shortstop Casey Martin. He has first-round tools, but slipped because of poor pitch recognition and a glove that's likely to land him in center field when it's all said and done. This class is high on risk, and high on reward..
Below you'll find a draft tracker for the Philadelphia Phillies.
| Round | Overall | Player | Position | School | Top 50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 15 | Mick Abel | RHP | Jesuit HR (OR) | No. 7 |
3 | 87 | Casey Martin | SS | Arkansas | No. 46 |
4 | 116 | Carson Ragsdale | P | South Forida | N/A |
5 | 146 | Baron Radclliff | OF | Georgia Tech | N/A |
For those wondering, here are a few other general notes to know about this year's draft:
The Tigers hold the No. 1 pick for the second time in three years, having previously selected Auburn right-hander Casey Mize in 2018. The Tigers had selected first overall just once prior to this three-year stretch: in 1997, when they drafted reliever Matt Anderson.
The top five players available in the class, according to our rankings, are Vanderbilt centerfielder/infielder Austin Martin; Arizona State first baseman Spencer Torkelson; Texas A&M left-hander Asa Lacy; Georgia right-hander Emerson Hancock; and Minnesota right-hander Max Meyer.
The Astros were stripped of their first- and second-round picks as punishment for illegally stealing signs. The Astros do have one selection in the top 100: the 72nd pick, which was compensation for losing starter Gerrit Cole to the New York Yankees in free agency.
The Red Sox, likewise, lost their second-round pick for illegally stealing signs.
Teams have until Aug. 1 to sign their draft picks.
